What is Incognito Mode? Is Private Mode really private? Is Incognito Mode secure?

The trusted incognito or private mode of your browser that promises to keep your operation hidden from anyone else who uses your device or phone, but what incognito mode does exactly is so trustful. Ok, here's the basic operating principle, Incognito mode works by holding the browser cache that holds the contents of the sites you visit, cookies that track your actions and form data that you join only briefly in your history. The idea is that this information gets erased once you're finished with your session and when you close your window, making it invisible to the next person who uses the browser again. This makes it useful not just to keep your browsing habits hidden from prying eyes, but also to get around website features that might make using them annoying because you can use incognito mode to log into a website under a different account without using cookies from your main browsing session, stop marketers from snooping on what you're looking at and even get around website paywalls For this last one, newspaper websites are legendary, but you've also seen the alerts that pop up informing you in incognito mode.

But, your boss or internet service provider still would be able to keep track of your online activity. How would they do that? Well, since only what is stored locally on your computer is influenced by incognito mode, all that traffic is still routed through your ISP's servers and even your school or office, so it can still be intercepted and monitored. You will read more about that right here, so that means that you may also need to consider using a VP if you really want to anonymize your web traffic, maybe over a network such as tor to further hide your identity, also note that just because a browser deletes your session information does not mean that it will prevent a certain snoop from finding out what you've been up to.

For instance, functionality that can run an incognito mode such as web applications or Adobe Flash can still leave noticeable traces on your machine unless you ensure that they are also disabled and browsers do not inherently safely erase any data you created during an incognito session so that any of it can still be found with a software, recovery program or inside the DNS caching of your PC.

So, with this instruction, you will need to make sure that you clear your DNS cache: ipconfig/flushdns. Finally, things that go wrong on your PC may also undermine the effectiveness of incognito mode as many browsers remove the information from your incognito mode session until you close your session, an accidental error such as a computer crash might prevent the data from being normally deleted.

And of course, I'm not trying to frighten you now or lead you to think that private mode is pointless, it's still an useful tool and a simple fast protection layer, but just like any tool, this only functions if you take the necessary measures to ensure that your employer doesn't stand behind your shoulder while you're using incognito window to email the job-seeking resumes.
